Castle Street with the gateway to the workhouse

Castle St. with the gateway to the workhouse

This picture shows the gateway to THE MERE UNION WORKHOUSE in Castle Street. The building was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1836. It stood where Castle Hill Service Station is today. Men and women lived in separate parts of the building which meant that families were split up. A schoolmistress took care of the children’s schooling. A Master and Matron were in charge.
