Lordsmead Mill
Lordsmead Mill, to the south of the town on the river Shreen, was an old grist mill when John Jupe took it over for
the machine spinning of flax. He installed a large waterwheel there
in 1837 and this survived (as is shown in the picture) until W.W.2.
Under his sons, Henry and Charles, the flax industry gave way to silk
spinning, chiefly based at Hinks Mill and the bobbins needed for this
were made at Lordsmead. Between 1925 and 1935 the mill was used by The
Hill Brush Company. It has now been converted into a private house.
