The Workhouse

The Workhouse, or Mere Union, in Castle Street was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and built in 1834. It served 12 parishes and was a large building with an imposing gatehouse and two lodges. It closed down in 1930 and was then used for various commercial purposes. It was demolished, except for a small part still standing, in the 1960s.
