The Clocktower

The Clocktower, built in 1868, replaced a medieval Market House that had become beyond repair and that was demolished in 1863. The Prince of Wales (later, King Edward VII) as landlord, paid for the building of the clocktower and his coat of arms is to be seen over the door. A slate panel on the south side commemorates William Barnes the Dorset poet who had a school in the upper storey of the Market House between 1825 and 1827. The clocktower is now the principal feature of the town centre and is in the care of the Parish Council. Inside the building is a small exhibition of old photographs, put there by Mere Museum.
