The George Inn
The George Inn is probably the oldest inn in Mere,
dating from 1580. It is stone-built but now faced with plaster and timbering.
It was, from about 1822 to 2002, known as The Talbot Hotel, the black
talbot dog being part of the coat of arms of the Chafyn Grove family
of Zeals House. The inn is famous for having been visited by King Charles
II in 1651 when he was fleeing after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester.
