The Hill Brush Company was started in outbuildings in Castle Street in 1922 by Fred and Bill Coward, members of an old Mere family. The business prospered, it moved to larger accommodation at Lordsmead Mill and then to a site in Woodlands Road , where it is today.It is now highly mechanised and employs more than 100 staff. Its products are sold world-wide and it received the grant of a Royal Warrant in 1981.
