United Reformed Church
The United Reformed Church, formerly the Congregational Church, in
Boar Street , just off The Square, is a noble example of Victorian chapel
architecture. It is very large, with galleries inside, and will hold
600 people. It was built in 1868-9, funded entirely by Charles Jupe,
the Mere silk factory owner. During the later 19 th .century the church
was well filled every Sunday. The congregation attending now is much
smaller and the U.R.C. minister is shared with Gillingham and Shaftesbury.
There is a Methodist Church in North Street and a Roman Catholic Church
in Pettridge Lane.
